Frequently Asked Questions
How does an energy broker get paid?
Most brokers, including UK Energy Saving, work on a commission basis. A small uplift is added to your unit rate by the supplier, which is then paid to the broker. For example, if your rate is 30p and a 1p uplift is added, your final rate becomes 31p.
How does the switching process work?
Once you choose a new supplier, they’ll notify your current supplier with 28 days’ notice. Switching usually takes 5–8 weeks, and you’ll be asked for a meter reading. This is used to calculate your final bill before your new supplier takes over.
What is an LOA?
A Letter of Authority (LOA) is a document that lets us communicate with your current supplier on your behalf, making the transfer process easier.
Will special needs affect my choice of supplier?
No. All suppliers must follow codes of practice to support elderly, disabled, and vulnerable customers, including facilities for visual and hearing impairments.
Does an LOA give you full rights over my account?
No. An LOA only grants the authority level you choose. It is used solely for the switching process and becomes void once the transfer is complete.
What type of contract will I need to sign?
Fixed-term contracts, usually 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years, are also available where rates stay the same for the full term.
Do I need to change pipes or wires when switching suppliers?
No changes are needed. Energy travels through the same pipes and wires regardless of supplier. Only rare cases in remote areas using local networks may face restrictions.
What if I owe money to my current supplier?
You’ll need to settle any outstanding balance with your current supplier before switching.
Do I have to sign an LOA?
No, it’s not mandatory. You can manage the process yourself, but signing an LOA makes the switch quicker and easier.
Should everyone switch suppliers?
Not always. If savings are very small, it may be better to stay with your current supplier. However, customers with the Big Six who have never switched often benefit most.
